Tanuki - Phoenix Graft Stock Species

I'm having trouble finding Shimpaku Junipers and that's the only species i've heard of used for Tanuki. My local landscape place has some nice looking Leyland Cypress that appear to have the kind of long slender trunk that i'll need. Any ideas of alternate stock to Shimpakus ? Any Phonenix Graft experts out there ?

Andy Smith of Golden Arrow Bonsai uses Black Hills Spruce, and will ship some to you.

He'll also sell you a DVD (or VHS) on how to do it.

There are a lot of species that will work. There probably should be some similarity between the deadwood and the species used.
(I'm not sure how a bougie would work on juniper deadwood, although I've been fooling around with juniper on buttonwood)

Chip,
There is no rule saying you have to use Shimpaku. I'd say use a juniper that grows well in your area. Leylandii is a fast grower but has a difficult foliage to work with and dislikes pot culture and root work. You must decide for yourself, but that is one humble nuts opinion. Buena suerte!
