Quoting From another Member's Post

Hello All,

I have noticed of late, some members quote a lot of previous posts, yet are not too sure how to get them looking right for clarity.

If you quote in just the standard text... it is difficult for readers to see who is actually "talking" and what section of the post is actually yours.

Here is a very quick guide I have put together to help anyone who may like to quote from any thread and post they see in future.

1st picture.... is a demo post I put up, together with a quoted section from it in the following post. This is how your "quoted" sections CAN LOOK !

2nd Picture.... shows the text editing box with how you actually see the post once you press the "QUOTE" button in the posters thread. That is located on the lower right of the post.

3rd Picture.... shows how I edited the post to leave the section behind I actually wanted.

4th Picture.... shows how you can add extra text or even make several quotes, whilst putting in the correct "html" codes to provide the shaded box that makes the quotes clearer.

Hope some old and NEW MEMBERS can make use of the information.

Best Regards,
Ian.

Hi Ian I have not tried that method next time I quote someone I'll give it a try. I use copy and paste to take the quote I want directly to my reply page using the Quote wrap tags.

Hans,

(Assuming most PC based software...)

You can "swipe" a section of any text... that then highlights it. You can press "delete" to remove it.... or right click, and an option box drop down menu appears next to your cursor. Now highlight and click "copy".

That portion of text is now stored in a temporary file.... now go to the area where you wish to insert the text..... right click again and you will have the option of "paste". That now inserts the text copied wherever you have left the flashing cursor. That is how most early word processors worked... and with practice, you can manipulate the posts and your replies quite easily.

Once you copy another lot of text, the memory of the previous text is wiped over.

Keep on doing that to complete the editing as required.
Hope that explains.

Note: - The beauty of the method I show above is ... it automatically puts the quote tags in for you. You merely delete out the other text you do not need.

Perhaps if some are just copying and pasting from the post... that is why the highlighted boxes are not showing to make the "quote" stand out.

Best Regards,
Ian

That is what I like about your method but there also can be a lot of deleting going on. Probably six of one and a half dozen of the other. Thanks for the tip Ian I just tried it and it worked great.

You are probably right. When you copy and paste you must use the wrap tags and type in after Quote (= "Ian_Homer") Without the parenthesis of course.

Just another "swipe" tip....If you have a mass of text to delete.. press left button where you need to start the deletion...that leaves the cursor there.. then move your cursor to the end section, whilst holding down the "shift" key. Then left click again. That then highlights the whole lot quite quickly. Then either delete... or copy as needed. (using the right click options).

Sorry, if this is basic stuff to some, but appreciate not everyone is conversant with Computers as others.

Ian.
