Mt. Mitchell, NC
This is a good place to visit to see examples of trees to copy in bonsai. The summit is the highest point east of the Mississippi and winds can exceed 200 mph. Lots of trees exhibit dead wood and I have found them inspirational.

Adam,
Sorry, no. I was trying to keep up with my two kids, and my 4 year old son is quite the daredevil (first broken arm was two weeks after he turned two). The only other pics I have were of the cloud cover coming over the mountain and one of a waterfall. I'll try to load them on this forum since it is permitted, and I'm trying to get adept at making files the right size. The pics were off a Sony Mavica CD300 and in 2048 (3:2) format. Obviously I have to reduce them in size and I need the practice!!! Look at the photo of the falls and you can see the trees that have been damaged and survived. Sorry the format is so small, but it gives you the idea of the "sharimiki" value these trees provide.

Adam,
You can see more examples of dead wood on many of these trees near the summit (about 1.25 miles above sea level). Next time I go, I'll try to take some photos of some of the "specimen" type of trees. Being a National Park, you can look, but not collect. Oh, well.

first of all john great photo's, secondly a good program for resizing images, and making them smaller files is photoshop, if your really into taking photo's with your caera and editing them its the best software available. the latest version is photoshop CS 8.0 but i find that version 7.0 is easier to use. hope that helps.

John,
This post Resizing Photos has a couple of FREE programs that you can download and use for resizing your photos. I find the program that [EDIT]:Hank Miller talks about GIMP to be feature rich and easy to use, but they both have their merits. Hope this helps Adam Last edited by Adam_MA : 25-Mar-2004 at 11:35 AM. |

Spoonman and Adam,
Thanks for the info. I'll certainly use it for a reference. Hope you both are doing well. John

I enjoy your shots of the area! I was so busy at the hotel w/ Volvo that I didn't even get outside but to walk. Hope to be that way again soon! vance hanna
