bonsaiTALK Hint: Did you know you can double click any bonsai term on this page for its definition?

Nah.

These are intended to be an ever growing source of data arranged by subject matter. If there is something missing, it can be added, therefore by definition, it is indeed all there is to know.

If by some very slim chance there is a tidbit of knowledge about a subject that is not available on the web, please let me know and I will post it in a thread and link it to the appropriate "All there is to know" thread.

Red Pine, thank you for adding to the links that Will is putting together. The moderators are all very pleased with the resource that he is putting together, and want to thank Will very much for the time spent on this.

Thanks to Will's work, you can cut and paste a comprehensive link for a beginner, or for someone asking a question, rather than just the last couple of threads that you have searched. By putting them all together it really helps people who don't have enough information and don't know how to look for it.

I have used it quite a bit on the Beginner and Ask Dr. Bonsai forums, and plan to use it whenever someone needs more information than someone can give them in a quick post.

Thank you, Will!!

One good book will outshine all those links. Try the Wonderful World of Penjing by Zhao.
Web sites are ok but only tell part of the story. The not peer reviewed part.

Association with knowledge

When someone refers others to links of information as though they aren't capable to find it on their own, it is the same thing as plagiarism.
Those who usually do this are those who cannot write these words of wisdom of their own knowledge.

Okay, so a person comes here who doesn't have a book and wants to learn about Penjing and finds this thread, is their time wasted Ron?

Maybe in all these threads we should simply put "Buy a book" and hope they buy a good one. But wait, no one book could cover it all could it? And unlike these threads, the book can not grow by being added to.

Lastly, I seriously doubt that one single book could outshine all the knowledge in these links and as I said above, it couldn't grow as these will.

I'd have to disagree with that assessment!

Plagiarism is passing off other people's work as one's own. I don't think there is any hint of that here.

Trying to codify the information available on the web into an index hardly misrepresents its origin. It actually allows the information to be compared and discussed reasonably and with complete attribution.

Will Heath has written a number of articles on bonsaiTALK and in support of other hobbies and interests. Folks like Robert J. Baran and Arch Hawkins have made great contributions to the hobby through their ability to assimilate and present information. Just check out Baran's living index of bonsai. It includes historical narratives, linklists and articles.

Comprehensive History of Bonsai is a great place to start. Can Mr. Baran write? He's written the definitive biographies on a number of bonsai masters including John Naka and Saburo Kato among others. The index of Bonsai Authors is an invaluable resource.

The late Arch Hawkins with Bill Cody put together "The Indices" a massive Subject-Title-Author index to published articles in Bonsai Today, International Bonsai and other periodicals. It's like the Reader's Guide to Period Literature. He was a founding member of ABS and BCI and wrote numerous articles for each publication, also editor of American Bonsai Society's Bonsai Journal.

I hope you will find opportunities to share in the learning experience at bonsaiTALK.

Regards,

Matt

I would suggest that a book, edited and reviewed, may indeed be a more reliable source of information than links that may, or may not, contain reliable information. Not the only sources, certainly, but often better ones. Bottom line is one should always be careful in judging the source of information. Not to say that links to on-line discussions are unreliable, but it is very easy to post darned near anything on line.

And I note that Ron's last post seems to have disappeared....

By your own words Brian, we would have to question even your post. Remember that even this forum we use is part of the internet, yet amazingly, we all still manage to learn here.

Please feel free to point out any links above that contain false, unreliable, untrustworthy, or otherwise bad information and I will delete them. Otherwise, let's add more links that would actually make this thread better for those who may appreciate the compiled knowledge base.

Missing post or not it is not worth the effort to have arguments over. I'm getting used to it and it really doesnt matter in the grand scheme of things.
It is the current wave of things
