Blackpine Decandle Time

I started with this plant 2 years ago. It was in a 5 gallon container. I took the central leader out of the plant to go with a slant style, hoping to maybe go semi cascade in the future.

I took out the leader and coverted to jin. I had the plant in this korean pot for the next year. The plant responded well and gave me quite a few buds.

I cut all the candles that had grown this year. When the tree back buds I will get about 3 times as many. The timing for this project hopefully will mean that the tree won't have time to fully develop these new candles, and that the will therefor be smaller needles. In the fall I will needle pluck last years needles, the ones that I cut last year( yuo can see the brown ends). Next year I should have all new growth needles, shorter and twice as many of them( some will have been removed due to too many in a cluster, don't want spoke wheels).

Before the rumors start, that's not my hand!

This is how the tree looks after pruning. You can see quite a heap of shoots in a pile there. This tree will probably be styled in the bunjin-gy style. I will pull the lower branches down more, and start working on the apex. I am much more pleased at the progress now. Upright was the way to go. Slant style just did not have the zip that I thought the tree posessed.

Speaking of pines, heres a clump of seedlings that I started this year. I hope to use these as an accent planting next year.

I chopped a couple of the seedlings just to see what would happen. Wow they started to ramify. Pushing new buds in just 1 week. I may pull a few of these out for future cultivation. Rip does these with a piece of netting over the container. They grow all contorted trying to get thru the netting.

Best regards, Bonsaial

I'm just moving OMC's post down here. I didn't want it to interrupt the thread. I have done the same thing inadvertently

I agree, 100% btw, but I was anticipating how that tree might look as a windswept!

Great tree, Al - I applaud your boldness in removing the apex. That was a terrific decision.

The camel cigs thermometer has to go, though.

I cut the candles on the 7th, and this is how were doin on the 13th. The adventitious buds that were ready to go in case of an emergency are startin to pop. These are not the real buds that I am hoping for, but its encouraging to see the first signs of new life. In the center of you screen the bud is at 11:00 o clock. The buds are about the size of the end of a pine needle.
