yatsabusa elm

Hi guys,i have a old elm,ive had a problem with some rot, down near the nebari on the trunk,so i scratched all the dead stuff off carefully and put just a little bit of lyme suflpher were the rot was located, the tree was indoors for a couple of days, before i did this the tree had a few leaves turning yellow from the fall.Four days after the surgery i noticed alot of leaves yellowing, how can i tell if this is from the cold weather and fall,or from me applying lyme sulpher? Is there something i can do to find out if my tree is dying or just going into dormancy? Thanks.I'm worried,i like this tree alot.

I wouldn't have thought the lime sulpher is responsible. You have only brought it in for a few days, so thats probably not it either. Maybe just the season, as you said it is autumn so it's shedding its leaves as it would 'in the wild'. Take a look at other deciduous trees around your garden or street (bonsai or not), and see how many leaves they are shedding. It might give you an idea if this is just due to the cold weather. How is the watering? Some pictures may help anyway. best of luck

Thanks Elgringo, all of the trees in my neighborhood are dropping leaves like crazy, the colors are about at there peak, some of my trees have changed, some have not, maybe because of me fertilizing late in the season??Anyway ive been keeping a close eye on my elm,and she seems to be okay.

This looks like simple fall coloring to me. This has been a very strange autumn. We're having October in November--at least here in Va. The 90 degree temps in October have stretched the time for fall leaf drop. I've still got trees in green leaves when typically they are bare at this time of year. IN the last fifteen years of growing bonsai this is the latest I've seen my trees remain green. Elms are among the latest this year, along with tridents. The last cold snap has begun to push them however. I'm seeing alot of the same coloring on my Chinese elms now.

Wouldn't worry about it.

thats good to know, your not very far from me,and yes my tridents are just begining to show some color change, especially on the tips of the leaves,i also have a couple of cork bark elms that still really have not changed. When i put my yatsabusa elm back outside there were a few very cold nights, hopefully thats what caused the more rapid change in color.
