Wind Burned Leaves
Hello all.
I need some advice. We recently had a terrific wind storm and unfortunately several of my maples, elms and hornbeams got some pretty severely windburned leaves. I am wondering if I should leave them alone or just prune them off and hope they regenerate. At least half the leaf is dead in most cases. It's so frustrating as they were all doing so well this year!! Thank you in advance for any help with this. Sandi |

Windburned leaves can't be repaired, and will be replaced eventually. You can either defoliate them or just live with the appearance until the trees drop their leaves in autumn. Be careful as some damage is actually caused by the soil drying out - leading to the loss of available moisture to the leaves and death of part of the root system. Are they continuing to use water at the rate you'd expect? Regards, Matt

Thanks Matt. They are still using water albeit a little slower on the really bad ones. Some are trying to send out new leaves. I think I will defoliate most of the bad leaves and see what happens. I love my bonsai!!
