That orange peel look to the branch means it has dried out and it is dead. When/if the trunk has this appearance, it will indicate the entire tree is dead.

If you can't get your money back based on their bad advise and poor draining soil, then cut off all those orange peel parts, and prepare for the worst.

I scratched about 1-2mm into the bark on the trunk, but all I could find was brown. Would I have to go a little deeper to find the living part, or is it just dead (the trunk is maybe half an inch thick).

I scratched a bit into one of the branches, and it was white. I am assuming this means it is alive? Maybe I could save this little branch by making a cutting

No, white is just they spongy tissue that makes up the vascular tissue of the tree. You're looking for green cambium just below the bark. If it isn't there it is probably dead too.

If it is orange peel textured, it is dead
