why is my trunk bark peeling off

Can anyone tell me why some of these trees (zelkova and elm) have their bark peeling off so badly? They are older more mature trees - is this normal? The only thing i have noticed is alot of ants and previous problem this spring with what i believe was black spot leaf fungus. Is it possible that either of those have caused this? Its been pretty hot and dry - could that be it?

Well you said that you know there was fungus and it probably roted some bark and then some ants wich are harmless but suggest that there were problems on the tree (fungus) . I think the fungus probably rotted the bark and some of the trunk underneath. Im just wondering if When the heat started the fungus dried if it did Im almost sure my asumptions are correct.

Well thats my crack at it hope you get new bark.

In Texas, we see this happen on trees that have extremes in temps hot/cold, plus rain plays a factor in ours.

I think it's correct to say fungus attack. If they were mine I woul dinspect the wood underneath for any rot. It may need to be removed to prevent further damage, but first I would drench it all with either something like fung-away (organic) or daconil, which is usually my first choice for severe infestations.

Anybody out there disagree or have other suggestions for this gentleman?
