Question What's causing this?

Hi everyone,

sad to report that the fukien tea I was asking about last time did pop it's clogs...oh well, another lesson learned.

Anyway, I'm on here again as I'm having a bit of trouble with my first conifer. I don't quite know what it is but I'm pretty sure it's a Juniper. It's about 6 inches tall and I've had it for a good 5 months in which time it has been up and down and not grown an awful lot.

Anyway I have noticed that the ends are starting to go brown and yesterday whole twigs were dropping off. I was wondering what the watering schedule should be like for this tree as my dad thinks I'm overwatering but knows nothing about Bonsai. I left him two of my trees while I was away and he killed them both so I'm not inclined to listen to him.

Also the soil is slower draining than my other tree even though I repotted them at the same time with the same soil mix...weird. It's in a positin of bright but not direct light but it seems to be drying out very quickly, I'm watering every day at the moment to prevent complete drying out of the soil. Any help would be appreciated and if you need more info just ask. I'll try and post a pic tonight.

Ta, Jo

Book junie

Hi Jo Sorry to break the bad news but it sounds like the juniper has gone to God. This must be tough for you losing two trees but it isn't the end of your bonsai training because you can research just how to keep trees in good condition for years to come.
If you have access to a library get a few books on bonsai and read, read, read. This will increase your confidence with the subject, remove a lot of mystery, give you the basics of 'how to'.
You may be surprised to know that we have many young people on this site in exactly the same position as yourself, very disappointed at their first effort but go on to greater learning within a short time. When you gain a little more knowledge you could do searches on this forum in a more specific way or combine both to get your info. and become proficient in your approach to the magnificent obsession called bonsai.

Good wishes Ash

Sadly its only really through trial and error that we learn the art of bonsai. I botched a trunk chop on an Azaela a while back, thought it was dead, left it, now boom, new shoots. But yes, it's gone to God, but don't let that stop you. The best of the best have lost more trees than you or I have ever owned, its all part of the art.
