Hola! I have 2 Japanese Red Maples Bonsai, but i am in Puerto Rico, in the sub-tropical region. My 2 maples have gone thru 2 different porcess in this fall. Both of them had burnt leaves, like those pictured, but 1 lost their leaves like a month agao, and the other has not yet.
Now, the one that lost the leaves I guess is healthy becuase it buds are red and healthy, so i guess it is dormant, obviouly not for the cold temperature, but for the diminish of sunlight hours. The other that has not lose its leaves is of which i am worried about. I'd like to know if there is any problem with it. All it leaves are burnt like those in the picture, but it has buds everywhere and the buds seem to be healthy. Can anyone tell me what is going on with my maples? what i must do? Are they dying? Should i prun the leaves that has not droped yet? Please, help me :-(Thanks, Jorge Joel... Emilia's Garden |

It looks like they are getting burnt by the sun. Try moving them into the shade and when you water them avoid getting water on the leaves. Japanese maples prefer partial shade and the leaves burn easily. Treat them gently and they should recover. I had the same problem and did not trim the leaves and mine recovered fine.

Thanks a lot!!!!
Hello Ksbonsai! Thanks for your advice
, I will move my trees to a shaded place. Though they are in a green house where the sunlighgt is filtered, i guess, as for what you say, the sun is still hard for them. Thanks again ,Jorge Joel... Emilia's Garden |

One thousand miles too far...
According to my meger understanding of geography, you are about 1,000 miles south of the range of Acer palmatum. Mine get burned at the northern end of their range, 2,500 miles north of you. You are a genius!

Hello Bill! What do you really mean with your comments?
My Japanese Maples are all in differnt stages or processes. One is healthy and green, the other had deep red leaves in september and by now droped all its leaves. And the other is this one, which is burnt. My Mother also has some of these trees and they all changed leaf color and droped, and she is in the higher mountains of the island, were tamperature drops to 50F. Now, how can I classify or undestand this behavior? Thanks, Jorge Joel... Emilia's Garden |

According to the US Forest Service, Acer palmatum's southern-most range is Tampa. I suppose (I don't know) that the lows all the way down to the 50's may ameliorate the rest of the temperature range for your Mother's locale, but your temperatures on the north coast are somewhat milder. (This is difficult for me to discuss with a straight face) 50 degrees F is not considered "cool" unless it's July. I think if you want to own Japanese Maples you should take them to your Mother's place every September and retireve them in March. Kudos to your Mother.

Hey Bill! Now I see what you mean, sorry if I did not understan
! I guess I should do what you say, take them to the mountains while fall and winter, so they are better than here. Obviously they will not be likein their natural place, but better than in the coast. I will do that. Thanks Bill !Jorge Joel... Emilia's Garden |

Jorge,
One small thing to add, you may not be able to do anything about the leaf burn after a certain period when your temperature range is to high. Here in the North Texas area, we have that problem. Japanese maples grown as bonsai, or grown as specimen trees in the ground all tend to be leaf burned by mid July here, and stay this way until leaf fall usually sometime in November. In the Spring time, they are truly beautiful, but we simply don't have the mild summers to keep them that way.

Acer's live anywhere I've found. The sunlight changes will drive the maples to go dormant and not the temperature. Definately leaf scorch..it will come back after it loses it's leaves.
