Western Hemlock Browning Tips

I recieved a bonsai tree about two weeks ago as a gift. It's a western hemlock, the tips are browning. I water it with both submerging and top every two days or so. It's kept outdoors in a fairly shady area, I live in New Orleans where it's fairly humid. The roots seem okay, and it has stick fertilizer in it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Since I've recieved it I haven't repotted, but I have removed the decorative gravel. I'm not sure of whether to remove the ornamental fisherman as of yet...

unfortunately some commercial bonsai don't get the best care on their way into their owners hands. I've seen plants at garden centers (and even grocery stores) and such that were practically bone dry. Most conifers will tolerate this condition for a week at most and then root dieback start.

The best suggestion I can make is to get future trees from a reputable dealer.

For this tree there isn't much you can do beyond practice good watering practice, and keep your fingers crossed. There is some info on watering in the ***FAQ***. Don't expect an immediate improvement, and be careful not to overwater.

Good luck,

Matt
