sick juniper

hello everyone,

I just recived a juniper bonsai from a friend that looks like it is dying. About half of the foliage is brown or gone already, but there are still a couple of spots of new growth. I think he had the tree in akadma for soil. The soil looks like it has a slight green tint too it almost like algea starting to grow. I think it may be from to much water and not enough sun. But i am really not sure whats wrong or if it is even worth trying to save. I tried to put a pic up but i can't make the pic small enough to put on the forum. any help would be appriciated.

Thanks, Clint

Have you been keeping it indoors or outdoors? What have your temperatures been like? In winter time many junipers will lose some color when the temperatures drop, but it's not a problem. Of course, as far south as you are that may not happen unless it's been unusually cold. Also, when have you been watering? Junipers like to get mostly dry between waterings.

but there are still a couple of spots of new growth. - Is it NEW growth, or green needles - new indicates alive, again dead juni's hold the green for sometime after passing on.

This most likely is alea( not an akadama color I have seen), not a good thing with Junipers, the do not like wet feet.

I think it may be from to much water and not enough sun. _If it's inside you are correct, if it's inside thats the first problem, these will not live for the average grower indoors. Overwatering would also be indicated by the algal growth, again not good for Juni's.

Can't be posative either without at least a picture, lots of software and sites to get that stuff. Is this a typical little juniper that we call mallsai?? if it is I would suggest putting it somewhere as cold as you have, with as bright as you can get, even if it's put it outside in the snow(possibly the best thing you could do for it), water IF it dries down, and see what happens come spring. Worth saving thats up to you, but it sounds like at best maybe a little live growth, and a few years to get it back to similar to what you had, if you learn how to work with these.

Question - What were the care instructions given for this, and where did you get it?

Thanks, Clint
By the way , you are in good company if you killed it (they don't commoit suicide you know - Thanks Hector), most started in the same fashion, lets see if you are up to the challange of our hobby, lets see you get another and try again.

Good Luck.

Thank you Dale and Bill for the advice. I do keep the tree outside all the time and I try to keep it in as much sun as i can during the day. I also water it less than my other two bonsai because I kinda figured it was being over watered.

It has only gotten down to about the mid 30"s down here but it has already warmed up.

as far as what i call new growth, there are a few new tips that have sprouted and are brighter green than the rest of the rest of the foliage.

Again I thank Both of you and i keep trying to get taht pic up

I picked up a freeware program called IrfanView for manipulating graphics. I've been using it for years. Works great for changing file formats, resizing, and cropping, plus a number of other manipulations. Go to http://www.irfanview.com/main_download_engl.htm for download links.
