Sick/Dying Plumb Bonsai--HELP

I received two Plumb Bonsai Trees from a friend for Christmas. They began dropping leaves very rapidly. I called a local nursery and was advised to give them more light and water (soak) every other day. I have been doing that and now both trees have yellow and red leaves which are dropping. They still have 70% green leaves but I really like these little trees and I know they were expensive. My friend bought them from Harry and David. Please advise.

I have surfed all over for plumb bonsai info and couldn't find any. Help

Sounds like you bought a Natal Plum

This isn't actually a plum of any kind, but an evergreen bush. *You can find more information in the BCI Species Index by looking under the plant's latin name, which is Carissa.

This plant should not be exposed to frost. *Only water when the soil has lost some moisture and become just a bit dry. *Some plants will drop their leaves when exposed to stresses like changes in environment or cold in shipping.

You should be okay if you don't react by overwatering.

Regards,

Matt

The tag that came with the tree said it would bear fruit in the spring. Is that a plumb or a natal plumb? It has round leaves.

Please follow the link in the message I posted earlier and see if it resembles your tree. I think they only offer 3 or 4 kinds of bonsai. A true plum bonsai (Prunus sp.) would not be generally available from a catalog plant company like that.

True plum is a deciduous tree. There are some photos of plum in the ***GALLERY*** enter PLUM in the search box. Those fruit in late summer.

Regards,

Matt

Ok that is the right kind of tree, but It has been almost a month since I got the trees and they are still dropping leaves. First the leaves turn yellow then red then fall off. This just doesn't seem usual. One of the trees is down to 50% green leaves maybe 20% red/yellow and the rest have fallen off. The other is in slightly better shape. I am still concerned

The Natal plum pronounced Nut-all is grown alot around here. The ones I have start this leaf dropping thet you speak of every year when temps get around 40 at night. I lose approx 40 percent of the leaves each winter. It comes back gangbusters in the spring. Hang in there with it.
