Privet Ligustrum

Hello,

I am not sure where to post this ...but here it goes.

I have some privets either chinese or japanese variety, one I have had for a couple of years is acting odd this entire season. The others are growing fine. The first 3 branches from the bottom have plenty of foliage. The rest further up including the apex are weak in new growth, and pale in color. These branches in question ,thier bark is turning a charchol color. It doesn't seem to scrape off like fungus or something. It's more like in the bark. I moved the tree to a larger pot about 2 weeks ago hoping for a solution. The tree has grown little suckers of the trunk since, but no improvement for the top portions of him.

Thanks!!!

Some species of Privet, like many trees, are susceptible to Verticillium wilt. Here's a link about it:

http://www.ca.uky.edu/agc/pubs/ppa/ppa18/ppa18.htm

You might try cutting through the branch somewhere between the live and dead portion, look for dark striation through the cross section of the wood, like fudge ice cream

There's a picture in the link.

Regards,

Matt

Water is the main vector. But theoretically, insects, and tools can transfer the infection and wind can carry spores when they're dormant. It's a nasty thing.

Matt

Ooooo I don't like this killer fudge. Would you know if the privet is the only type that is affected,I think I have seen these swirl marks before on large trees that have had a trunk chop or jin/shari work. Also Is their some tips about what to look for on the outer surface when purchacing bonsai materia?

Thanks again

Unfortunately no. Japanese Maples are probably the most susceptible of the commonly grown bonsai. I can't guarantee to you that your specific privet is a host. I have seen privet on both the susceptible and the resistant lists at different sites.

Good luck,

Matt
