Yes, the darkness of the soil bothers me as well. I usually try to cover some of it with fine gravel and moss, but moss does not like the hot Greek sun.
Here the temps are about the same, except in the summer, when they ususally reach 38 degrees celcius. And, of course, this year's winter when it dropped to -4 celcius.
