I would agree that the problem probably isn't a fungus.

It's probably a soil/root problem. Drying foilage means the leaves aren't being supplied moisture from below. Overwatering, as much as underwatering, can cause the problem.

Overwatering rots roots, which no longer function, which means they can't supply water to foliage. Uncerwatering speaks for itself. Dry roots are usually dead roots. The crispy leaves can be a result of either.

Good news and bad news about my little ilex after its repotting and trimming....

First of all, it's still living, apparently (green xylem in ~2 main branches, plus the appearance of a tiny bit of backbudding on those branches)! BUT, it had some massive die-back, consisting of all of its leaves. I cut the blackened branches back, and not many of them made it: dead-looking wood and all, even when cutting past the blackened bits. I figure that I'll leave these dead branches on the tree (no cut paste handy) until I either find that it's bounced back considerably or that it's completely dead.
