One Of My Tridents Isn't Breaking Buds

I planted nine trees back in late winter/early spring into a mica forrest pot. All but one have begun to show signs of spring, and are producing a lot of growth. The largest/oldest tree has not shown any signs of wanting to come out for spring. Am I early in expecting growth? I hope it is fine, seems strange that the smaller trees, smaller than pencil thick recieved similar root pruning yet they seemed to have come through.

Why not wait it out? The trunk on the far right isn't very leafy, either. In the mean time, bring the soil level up around those exposed roots unless you are going for the "Mississippi Flood Zone" look.

Regards,

Matt

P.S. That looks like a lot of pumice in your mix, or is that a groundcovering?

I was planning on waiting it out, just has me a little worried! As far as the "groundcover" yes, that is pumice. When I potted I thought my mixture was ok, this is what it looked like freshly potted. With watering and the elements, it has now come down to what you see in the first pictures. I guess the soil compacted and the pummice made its way to the top.

I am going to add more soil to cover the roots better, should I remove some pumice or place more soil on top of it?

A thought, perhaps the soil was washed away with watering? If you think that is possible try a 'lighter' watering technique

I will watch watering. I thought all was fine, I am using a mist attachment on the hose, and man is it a fine mist!

mist is for foliage. You want a "light rain" effect. You can find hose end nozzles of this type at TreeBay Bonsai Tools & Supplies or your local bonsai nursery.

Matt

Hello contaxg2,

It looks to me like there is damage to the tree in question, particularly in the second photo. It looks like the middle section of the trunk is quite different in colour to the rest of the trunk.
Of course this might be just where the trunk is wet from watering, or it might just be a trick of the light. Can you clarify?

Regards,

TB

Scratch the bark with your fingernail. If it is still green you have a chance for it to sprout out. It may even take 3 more months!
If the bark underneath is not green the trunk is dead. Then get another one.
Good luck.

The discoloration of the trunk is from fresh watering. I will scratch the bark tomorrow, The buds look like they are begining to fatten up, so hopefully all of the worrying is for not. Just thought the oldest ree would sprout before the younger trees.
