While sold as an indoor species and one of the few temperate species that can live year round indoors, Chinese elm are deciduous trees and will lose their leaves in the fall like other deciduous species. This is triggered by the Autumnal Equinox--one of two days in the year when the length of day is equal to the length of night. If you keep this tree indoors, it will grow a new set of leaves soon if you don't panic and do something silly, like quit watering it or fertilize it

So your tree is only doing what is normal. Watch the soil that it doesn't stay too wet while the tree is growing a new set of leaves, but don't let it dry out too much. Give the tree plenty of light and keep it away from heating vents that may dry it out too much while it's indoors. If it were mine, I'd keep it outdoors where it can receive all the things it needs to keep it robust and healthy.

Keep it away from unwanted heat. Temp should be 60 degrees or above. Do not fertilize. Winter is approaching, add insulation around the pot and have yourself a cool beer.

My Chinese elms have been outside this fall, lows over the last week several degrees below freezing. The soil has frozen once or twice. They are now in my unheated garage, pots mulched, to sleep away the winter. I have never kept them indoors, so I can't comment or give any advice other then to say insulating the pot of a tree that is indoors in a heated environment makes no sense at all. As Greg said, the trees would prefer to live outside year round if possible.
