My Cotoneaster Mallsai Is Dying

Hello all bonsaiists!

I purchased my first bonsai/mallsai from Chinatown in Los Angeles a couple of months ago. It was a healthy little cotoneaster with lush green foliage. It didn’t take long time before the leaves started turning brown.

Now, I read on bonsaitalk.com that most mallsais don’t survive, so I have a feeling there is no way to get it back to health. But I thought I’d post a couple of pictures of the leaves, and maybe someone can tell me why the leaves are brown, and hopefully I will learn something new.

Details:
I water the plant twice a week and the soil seems moist all the time
I live in Southern California (zone 10) but not the very hottest parts of CA (westwood to be precise)
The plant is in shade until 1pm and then it gets full sunlight
I trimmed the plant moderately in August
The plant develops small green shoots on the stem that just turns pale green and stops growing
The brown leaves feel dry and falls off if I rustle through the branches.

Thanks for the help,
Robin

Hi Robin,

It would do better with full sun early in the day and perhaps some cover from the direct afternoon sun after 1PM or so, not the other way around. It should be consuming more water than this. The fact it is not suggests that there may be a problem with the roots.

Do you have this plant outdoors? A photo of the whole tree would be helpful. From what I can see, this is often how a plant in a west facing window looks after it gets burned by heat.

Regards,

Matt

another picture

Matt,

Thank you for your help. I went out and took another picture of the whole tree. I hope this can help you determine better what might be wrong with it.

I stuck my finger in the dirt and it feels really moist, so I don't think it has been "dehydrated". But as you implied in your response, it looks like it has been burned by the heat/sun.

Unfortunately I don't have a spot in my limited living space that would allow for morning sun. But I hope that now when we're getting into fall and winter that the sun will be less harsh in the afternoon.

Do you think the tree has a chance to recover?

Thank you again Matt,
Robin

It looks worse in the second photo for some reason. I don't think it will last under those conditions, and it would probably need a greenhouse to recover if that's possible at this point. - protection from that afternoon sun and some humidity.

It looks like it baked to me somehow.

Sorry,

Matt

Ancient juniper,

Mallsai is a term used to express a mass produced bonsai, generally of very low quality, that is often sold in a Mall (a shopping centre) in the USA and other countries and therefore the term mallsai is a pun on Mall and bonsai. It can therefore include any bonai that is like this and the bonsai/mallsai therefore does not have to have rocks glued on the top of the soil, although they often do.

Hipe that clears up any confusion.

Cheers Jonny.

Rest easy, Ancient Juniper. There is a rock on the soil!

Matt

For you guys who have prayed for my bonsai I have to tell you that is REALLY dead now. I had my hopes up for a long time, but there is absolutely no sign of life anymore.

Gee, I hope it wasn't REALLY expensive...

Go to the local woods and find some native seedlings - much healthier than hanging round Malls anyway.

jeremy_norbury:

I actually bought my "mallsai" on the street here in Chinatown/Los Angeles. I don't know if that is considered a mallsai. But I do agree with you that getting out into the local woods is much healthier than hanging around malls.
