Robin, it looks to me like this pot doesn't drain properly. Does it have holes in the bottom? Are the holes blocked? Bonsai soil must drain quickly and not become waterlogged. The roots of bonsai require both air and water and the effect of the soil becoming water-logged, either because of the pot not having proper drainage holes or because of the physical composition of the soil itself is rather similar to the soil drying out completely.

Two hours and you are in Big Bear. Chinatown is interesting, but it doesn't beat the San Bernardino Mountains.

I live in Westwood (UCLA) so The san Gabriel mountains are closer. I've been up to Big Bear many times, but that was before I started bonsaiing
