Mugo Pine question
I have a Mugo pine that has lived outside for the last year. Before that it lived in an unheated greenhouse. This spring there was new growth all over the place and it was the picture of a happy tree. Lately some of the inside needles have turned brown and fallen off. The needles on the ends of the branches look fine. I thought it might be lacking sunlight so I moved it to a place where it gets about 4 hours of full morning sun a day. It gets watered daily, I'm pretty sure it's not getting overwatered. I'm concerned that whatever is making the inside needles die and fall off will progress to the outside needles. I don't have much experience with pine trees, most of my bonsai are deciduous. I know that some pine trees drop old needles, is that what could be happening here? The tree is about 65 years old and was purchased from one of our local bonsai masters as he retired from his business. It's spectacularly beautiful and I really really don't want to kill it.

I'd be letting it get more than 4 hours of sun, pines need that, atleast 6-7. Might just be casting off old needles, too, do you pluck the old needles in the fall?

Mugo Pine Question
Thanks for your reply. One of our local bonsai experts took a look at it and pronounced it a happy tree. Evidently it's just dropping old needles. What a relief! He also suggested a little more sunlight which is easily done.
