larch tree gone brown

Hello All,
5-6 weeks ago my larch trees needles started to go brown. Just afew tips at the ends of some branches but before long the brown spread to virtually every needle turning them completly brown. Last week I gave the tree a good shake and all the needles fell off. I've had this tree for about 6 years, I figure the tree is about 11yrs total

I suspect I got a little over zealous with a nitrogen fertilizer. Usually i'm quite cautious with the fertilizer but I suspect my annual herb garden watering got confused with my orchid watering which got mixed up with the bonsai....
Does this sound like a reasonable explanation?

Low and behold this week I have new buds bursting everywhere on the tree which I am obviously very relieved to see but if I could avoid this kind of stress (both me and the tree) it would probably be a good thing. If you have any insight into this kind of behaviour for a larch I would appreciate the feed back.

Thanks in advance

Russ,
It sounds like one of two things happened. The tree was subject to too much sun ( it happens to larch in the mid-summer sometimes),it is a good idea to put them in 40% shade at that time of year. Or the second explaination could be that in misting trees in the near vacinity of larch it may have spurred a fungus affecting the needles. In case one they should be OK Just remember next year to shade them in mid summer. In the second case they should still be OK Just spray them w/a fungicide .. I have about 20 larch in my collection and it does happen sometimes. Though not lifethreatening (never has been for my trees) it is troublesome especially if you were going to display a tree that year.I have found that if the waxy bud in the middle of the rosette is there it should open in the spring. In either case I would think a shot of fungicide wouldn't hurt! Hope this helps
