Juniper help!!!

I have a new juniper bonsai which I purchased as a starter plant about two months ago. The plant is about 5 inches tall and is in a 4 in diameter pot. The plant lives outdoors (I live in Atlanta, GA) and is on a deck that faces to the north. It gets a mix of direct sun and sun/shade. I water it frequently making sure the soil does not stay dry for long periods. I actually soak the pot in a tub of water for thorough watering. Recently, I have noticed that some of the foliage is starting to turn brown and fall off. Is this plant dying? Am I watering it too much?
Help please!!

While juniper is considered evergreen, the foliage is replaced by the tree occasionally. Your tree may just be sloughing some old needles since we are starting to head into winter. Keep an eye on it, it may be spider mites.

I would be more concerned about the way you are watering the tree. Watering by immersion is an emergency procedure used to revive trees that have been neglected and are dying of lack of water. It can be used occasionally during the hottest part of the growing season when daily watering just isn't quite cutting it. You chould be watering from overhead from a hose with a fine rose attached for a shower effect that pulls air behind it as the water exits the drain holes of the pot. This does not happen when watering by immersion--the water displaces all the air in the pot then only drains incompletely. A "perched layer" of water constantly remains near the drainage layer of your pot setting up an anaerobic environment that fungus and bacteria of the bad variety may thrive. The lack of soil air in that layer can also kill roots.

Thanks Gregb. I will discontinue the practice of submersion watering.

What do you think about keeping the plant outdoors? Is it ok to keep the bonsai outdoors during freezing temps? Last night the temps dipped into the 20's. I placed my tree in my unheated greenhouse and mulched around the pot for root safety. Is this necessary?

Yes, I think it is necessary. Juniper is a hardy species even in a pot; but not to be treated the same way as an in-ground tree. Be sure to check in on it often and water if it becomes dry. Some even place ice cubes around the trunk, so when the temps. warm up, the tree gets a drink
