Juniper Bonsai drying up

My Juniper's foilage is turning brown and dry. The foilage is also starting to fall off. The soil is moist, I water and mist it every day. It is kept in a well lit room in New Jersey. The temperature outside is very cold, but it is kept indoors for the winter. The temperature in the house is 71 degrees. The plant was purchased in Florida and was given to me as a Christmas present. That is why I am keeping it indoors through the winter months.
Do you have any suggestions on what I can do to save my Juniper?

Re: Juniper Bonsai drying up

Hi Felicia,

Your juniper really belongs outside. *Unfortunately, by the time the foliage begins to fall, these trees are usually dead. *You can scratch the bark with a fingernail at the soil line and see if there is any sign of life (green color).

Most of the trees sold as "mallsai" or commercial bonsai weren't built to last. *They are often underpotted and grown in greenhouse conditions for a few years, then they are shipped around the country and often wind up in the hands of retailers and owners who have no idea how to care for them.

The end result is often a stressed out plant that is overwatered or underwatered and cultivated in less than ideal conditions on top of someone's TV set or near a baseboard heater, or in the living room in the dark.

The result - dead bonsai

Please check out the article called BEWARE THE MALLSAI in TreeBay Bonsai Tools & Supplies and don't be hard on yourself. *Most people make this mistake the first time.

Regards,

Matt

Re: Juniper Bonsai drying up

Is it worth it for me to put the Bonsai outside now? What can I do to try and bring it back to life? There is some green, so there is sign of life. Help me save my bonsai!

That is for you to decide. It is very unlikely to survive indoors. Water it extremely well and put it outside. Check it every couple days during the winter to see if the soil is drying out and needs rewatering. Don't expect anything to happen until Spring

Matt

Re: Juniper Bonsai drying up

I too have an extremely dried out juniper that was bought for me as a Christmas gift from a nursery that doesn't really specialize in bonzai. In an attempt to save this sad little tree I immursed it in water for half an hour. After this time I let the excess water drip out and placed it in a clear plastic bag with chopsticks holding the bag away from the foliage. I then put it in a VERY sunny spot in my house. I'm not sure yet if this method will work, but it's worth a try. As soon as I see new growth on the tree, i'll remove it from the bag and put it outsie. I hope this will work!
