The needles are turning brown and a white fungus is kilig the new branches. Is this white powdery mildew? I've sprayed for it without success. Help!

Barry,
Looks like adgelids to me, but I can't be sure, picture's kinda fuzzy. I use malathion to rid the pines of these when they crop up, usually in the fall. Make it a weak solution if that's what you decide to use, your tree is pretty close to the edge. Good luck with it.

This pine is far from dead. It is very weak but the needles are still strong at the base and that is good. If you can fix what is wrong you can save it easily. HB101 will help here. Get some and start useing it right away. Double strength only once per week. Take the tree to George Muranaka he's only about 20 minutes from your place. He should be able to help. Water is all important now and should be checked before every watering. The tree will not use as much water right now so you may find yourself cutting back.
Do not fertilize till signs of new growth.

Good luck, Al

HB101? I've never used it. I did look it up on the Internet. Your recommendation means a lot. Any testimonials, Al?

wow, I misspelled that one, looks like ADELGIDS. Sorry Barry. And in lieu of Al being here, I know HB-101 is good stuff, and will help the overall health of the tree. It's about 25.00 a small bottle, but well worth it.

It looks to me like woolly aphids to me. I agree with Al the tree should survive fine once the infection is stopped. I have used the Malathion to kill these before. Yausu Mitsuya told our group to spray the white webs hard with water until they are gone before using the insecticide. He recommended repeating the water spray and insecticide again in two weeks.

I use the HB101 as does many of the people in our club. We are all getting great results with its use.

Wooly aphis.

I think there is more detail in the Wiki. Can we use your picture to illustrate the article?

Matt

HB 101 is a Japanese elixer that is used to fortify the plant from disease. It is made from the extracts of pine, spruce and cedar. All trees known for long life and disease resistance. This is not a fertilizer but more of a plant revitilizer and to help the plant get a foothold on its strength. The Japanese swear by this stuff. I have seen with my own eyes this stuff bring a pine back from the brink of death. I mean the needles were solid yellow with only a hint of green at the base. Ripsgreentree and I watched the nursery owner bring this thing back with in a month to six weeks with this stuff.

Good luck, Al
