Question Jasmin Orange dead? -Please help

I think my tree is dead. It is a Murraya Paniculata (or Orange Jasmin). One day without water and all the leaves dried up.

Because its trunk is so hard, I don't think I can see any green underneath, so I can't tell if it is dead.

I watered it and put it in a plastic bag to capture the mosisture but do not know if it will come back.

How long should I wait?

On the other hand, I live in Canada, now getting very cold, I don't think it will start to bud. It has no leaves left.

Do you all think it is dead?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Carpe Diem, Hopefully all is not lost. First remember from where this info is coming... a novice, but one who has been there and had that done to me.

To start, if the tree is truely dead, there is nothing you can do to hurt it. If it isn't dead well, you can and should take the proper action. Here in northern Vermont our trees are either dormant or nearly so. You live in a similar climate. I would treat this tree as I would if it had normally lost it leaves and was being put away for the winter. Do not give up on the tree yet.

my 2 cents
Jay

Back to the topic at hand: shouldn't Murraya Paniculata be kept indoors during the Vermont winter? I know it should in Seattle, because I just turned down a chance to buy a spectacular shohin for a decent price, on a grounds that I don't want to do indoor trees.

Best wishes,
Carl

I'm still confused as to how it could dry out in one day without water
>One day without water and all the leaves dried up.

Especially in a cold climate. Is it possible it FROZE?
>On the other hand, I live in Canada, now getting very cold,

Try the Scratch test

Regards,

Matt

It dried and the leafs dehydrated. The lefs were still there, but suddenly wilted. Then they were so dry that they fell from the tree (while still green).

Now it has no leafs and I am still watering it as usual and I have it on a plastic bag to keep it moist.

The leaves wouldn't dry and wither in a day from lack of watering. I believe it is more likely that it was something else. Perhaps it froze. do you have it outdoors? What has the temperature been? It should survive O°C, but not much less!

BTW, Don't water it as usual if it has no leaves. It will rot. You want to water it when it needs water, which should be much less frequent.

Regards,

Matt

It is indoors as it is getting cold here (10 C). I will keep trying until it shows no signs of life.

I tried the scratching, but the bark is quite hard, no good it seems for these trees.

There must be an underlying problem other than not getting water for one day. Pull the tree from its pot and check the root system, is it rotting? Is the the entire root ball moist? If kept indoors is it on a radiator? Something that would dry it out faster than normal? Check the leaves, branches, and trunk for insects/fungus.

My opinion is that if it dried up as fast as you said it did, it probably got a good dose of heat, either from a heating source or the hot sun through the window. You may have a chance to save this tree......if the root ball is dry, soak it in a sink and keep it away from the windows, or at least direct sun for a bit. I would not wrap any plastic around it, you will want the moisture to evaporate as normal....not suffocating the roots. Wait til it is healthy (if its not too late that is) You may see some budding in a week or so, maybe less. Dont give up on it too easily. One of my OJ's took a beating last winter, dropped leaves etc, and I put outside during the spring. Buds were noticed within a week, and is healthy now. My experience tho is very limited with this species, so take my advice with that in mind. Good luck.

Paul
