Japanese Maple Is Sick

Maybe not dying but something is sure wrong.
This was one of the first 'bonsai' I bought, if I had it to do over I would pass it up but thats water under the bridge.
This is what it looked like about 10 weeks ago.
Not a bonsai but at least its healthy.

1) It looks like wind-burn - japanese maples are particularly susceptible to this.

2) When the soil is bad and of poor structure, it's never a bad time to change it.

Yes, it looks like serious wind- or sun- burn.

I'm not sure where you are Numbaten, but Carcey- I am also in Dallas and my tiny maples have suffered since I moved here late winter. Be careful about the amount of sun they receive and by all means, protect them from the drying winds we have here.

The burn is mostly cosmetic (unless it is allowed to continue to happen) and the leaves should come back as normal next spring.

As a matter of fact, after my maples acclimated to the Dallas climate and started showing these signs I moved them to a better spot and the newest growth is doing just fine. Of course, it is only June. I'm a bit concerned about July and August! It gets mighty hot here, doesn't it? UGH.

Not to worry, J. Maples are good for doing this, especially the Bloodgood variety shown in the first pic. If the wind don't get them the heat and sun will. It's just something you'll have to learn to live with. Enjoy them in the early Spring before it gets too hot. Try to give them as much shade as possible in the heat of the day. Here's a pic of mine that I've been working on for 13yrs. now and it does the same thing yours does. It won't hurt the tree at all except appearence wise.

It's not sunburn. That affects the leaf center.

Well, this is a little bit of good news I guess, and I'm glad to not be the only one trying to grow japanese maples in the Texas summer heat. I'm in Arlington, Texas.
I have two trident maples that made it thru last summer so I do beleave it can be done.
Also, I have 5 other (6 if you count my airlayer) maples that live all around this one and have yet to suffer like this.
I dont know the names of these trees yet, I just call them all japanese maples, but only the sick one ever had red leaves.
My last post had the wrong photo, this is the soil, should I change it now? It has worried me ever since I got this tree.
