Help - My 'lil juniper is dying..?

I made a little cascade juniper tree, and it has been doing very very well for the past 4 months. Today I was just inspecting my trees, and the junpier I have is seeming to feel dry to the touch, like it's on it's way to turning yellow. as I touched the buds, it was like pine needles flaking off, still green though.

I know I havent over-watered it, It has been under a sill, out on the patio, with lots of sun, and we've had lots of rain. I watered it very heavily today, hoping that the dryness of the tree was from lack of watering due to the sill (i laid off of watering for 2 weeks, cause the rain did it for me.) For soil I am using 1/3 pine bark, 1/3 gravel, 1/3 potting soil

My other juniper is doing fine. Still lush, and green and soft to the touch. so, the only thing I can think of is that the roof sill was preventing the rain from getting into my "now dry" tree.

Is there anything else that can cause this dryness? How will a junpier die (Chinese garden junpier) when it's over-watered? what are the symptoms?

here is my tree (in healthy state):

Thanks in advance guys.

If you stick your finger in the soil before watering it will tell you whether the soil was dry and then you'd know if it wasn't getting rain under the sill. Since you've already watered you can't tell but you'll want to do so in the future, and check your trees even if it's raining, because they can get knocked over or blown by the wind.

Junipers don't give a lot of warning when they die from watering issues. - they just dry out as you've described. If it goes evenly brown, it's definitely dead, but that can take 1 month (longer in wet weather) to happen, even if you to entirely separate the trunk from the roots.

Regards,

Matt

Oddly enough the symptoms for over watering and under-watering are the same. This is because the problems exhibit themselves on the top of the tree and are the same both are due to lack of water. I know this sounds like a contradiction but what happens when a tree is undewatered the top starts to abandon foliage it can no longer support, it turns yellow and drops off. When a tree is over watered roots can rot and die. The result is the top no longer receives what it needs from dead roots and the top starts to abandon growth it can no longer support, it truns yellow and falls off. In the end the top of the tree dies from the same thing, not enough water the tree dies from the top down, over water the tree dies from the bottom up, but both are due to lack of water. This make any sence to you?

What is also very strange with Junipers. When you are transplanting a tree or yamadori Juniper, they seem to do very well and make a lot of new shoots, one year. Two years later its dead, without any proper cause.
Thats why Junipers arent suitable for beginning bonsainists and yet, everybody who takes lessons, starts with Juniper (or Cotoneaster)
