Help

uh how can you tell if your bonsai is dead or not, cause it would suck to spend several months watering a dead tree without knowing it.

thanks,
joe

You must pardon me for a quick chuckle here. It is just that many of us have been here. You must have a tree that has already lost its leaves (deciduous). Welcome to the fun! If you are truly worried, you might very carefully lift the tree out of its pot and check the roots. If they look ok then I would just wait until spring for the new buds.................No buds, no tree. Then go to the General section of this site and read the entries under lost trees (or whatever it is really called). Read those and weep. Then move on to another tree and another try. It is all part of the learning process and the fun.

enigmamcmxc3, as Moni said... we've all been there and done that!

One thing you can do is to scrap a little spot on the back of the lower trunk (very small). Look and see if there is some green below the bark, if so there is still hope. Remember you can not kill a dead tree. Give it time, and do not overwater. If it is in dormancy it requires very little water. What kind of tree is it, and where are you keeping it?
