emergency re-pot

Hello everyone,

I have a sick looking juniper which is planted in akadma. I would like to lift the tree from its pot to check for root rot. The akadma seems really loose and i'm scared to lift the tree in fear that the soil may break up and be difficult to put back in the pot. Is this common for akadma soil?

If i do have root rot, would it be safe to re-pot my tree at this time of year?

I live in southern Louisiana and the weather goes from cold to hot this time of year.

Thanks for any advice given,

Clint

I would wait a while longer for the repot. If your akadama appears loose, then it has not yet broke down. So your statement of "is this normal for akadama " would be yes. I assume your over watering your tree due to your suspicion of rot root.

I would suggest that you wait till spring on the repot. For now apply a dose of Captan 50WP to combat the root rot if that is indeed what you have.

Clint...

Root rot usually smells to high heaven...something like rotten eggs...

If your Jun has root rot, you certainly should be able to smell it.

Pick up the pot and smell the soil...

TO THE FORUM...if root rot is found, isn't the order of the day...EMERGENCY REPOT. NOW!...
