hey,
i have had my bonsai trees since christmas, so about three months. they have been fine untill recentely. the serissa foetida, which i know is fussy, all the leaves have shrivled and is not looking happy, but i know they are picky, i ahve just done a scratch test and it is green underneath the bark, it's only a young tree of two years. the leaves haven't dropped and are still attached, will it come back to life when it gets a bit warmer... it is kept inside in sunlight but not a window sill, it's away from a radiator too ?please help also i have a buddha's belly, which was fine untill last week,, the leaves also shrivled when i went away for the weekend..(leaving a friend to water) nothing happenedm untill i noticed that the bk has gone a very pale colour today, it is in a similar position to the serissa, except it's a few years older... help me xxxxx |

You need to tell us more about how the trees are potted. Is the soil always wet? Or did they dry out? Don't overwater them now... they take a lot less water if they don't have leaves.
Can you put up a picture? And what is a buddhas belly? Never heard of that one. Joanie

i don't keep them always wet, as i didn't want the roots to rot only when they needed it. i guess they may have dried out??
the pots are shallow and small and they were potted by a garden centre. i can't put photo's up todday but i can soon. and the buddh'as belly is a type of bamboo, somone suggested i keep it outside, but it's very windy and cold at the moment!!! xx |

Did you test the soil every day to make sure that they didn't dry out? Is there enough humidity in your house? (Heaters and furnaces dry the air out in a house more than we realize) If it's been cold since Christmas and your heater is running, the trees and bamboo probably dried out. They need humidity. Or, they may have dried out. Don't water them again until they show signs of coming back. Keep them in a humid area... try a bathroom maybe? If they don't have leaves, they don't need sun. But they will either come back, or they won't. The biggest danger is that the roots will rot, because there aren't any leaves to pull the water up and out of the soil. ("transpire", sort of like sweating....)
The bamboo needs lots of sun... but is apparently suitable for indoors. See detailed info here. If your trees are dead, take heart. May of us can't keep serissa alive either. It would be best if you take a little time on this forum to read about suitable species of trees for you. If they need to live indoors, try ficus. Learn what it takes to keep the ficus alive in the house. Do a little research first, and then go out and get another tree or two. The rewards will be worth it! Joanie
