Dying root-pruned brush cherry?

Hi,

I've recently root-pruned a small potensai brush cherry (kept indoors, it's sub-tropical) and I'm seeing a lot of dry, crumpled leaves. I've read that this species can sustain the removal of up to 90% of its root system, but thought I'd play it safe by pruning off only about 30-40%. When the leaves first began to dry I remembered that I had forgotten to remove some of the top foliage in order to compensate for the missing roots. I've since removed about half of the top foliage but the remaining leaves continue to dry. Is this typical?

I've been trying to keep the soil slightly more moist than usual and have located the tree near a humidifier with hope of reducing transpiration. Will this help? Anything else I should try?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

How cold is it at night where you are? The tree might well do better outdoors if it isn't going to freeze.

No, if they are new leaves dying, it's not typical. The older leaves sometimes fall, but they don't shrivel.

Regards,

Matt

Error Gonna die...

Root pruning in any situation where you cannot immediately thrust the plant into a high growth situation: Strike One. Not trimming the top to reduce demands upon the reduced root system: Strike Two. Applying advice only suitable in the plant's native zone, IF suitable even there (I seriously doubt it): Strike Three.
