dropping inside needles

I have a cedar forest i put together this spring. i don't know for sure what kind of cedars they are- the tag just said cedar. they are definately not white cedars.
my camera is not here so i can't post pictures.
the trees are on my porch railing. the porch is in the champlain valley in vermont.
for awhile, the needles/branches (they are small trees) have been turning yellow and then brown and dropping off. The tips yellow and then brown- the brown stops abrubtly and the part of the needle behind it stays green. mostly the needles that this has been happening to are closer to the trunk of the trees. This started happening in the middle of the biggest tree and has now spread. they are starting to look very skinny and pitiful.
please help.

If your saying that ONLY the inside needles are dropping and the outside {noticable ones} needles are heathly then this is natural and is okay. They do this because of lack of sunlight. To see this in nature look in to a bush or hedge there are no leaves growing on the in side of the bush because theres no light. If this isn't what your saying than its somthing other than that.Hope this helps.

i looked again - reading your response made me see there are two problems- 1) the inside needles are turning yellow and dropping on all the trees. 2) on the main tree, the tips are turning brown. the brown doesn't go all the way to the trunk but stops. when i touch these brown parts, they just schluff off. the yellowing just started happening and the browning has been happening since i planted the tree.

Bug

Sounds like die-back either from lack of light or a bug munching on the leaves. Check very closely for a caterpillar and if found spray the little varmints. Apart from root problems or lack of feeding that is all i can offer. Regards Ash

Luscious, it is difficult to say if your little trees are infected by a fungus or not, because we have little detailed information or good pictures on the symptoms they show.
Here is a good link on the diseases of red cedar which give good information on the symptoms of two fungal pathogens( Phomopsis during spring and Kabatiella in the fall), both of which are quite common on these trees :

i found out what is troubling the forest. I also discovered that they are southern white cedars.

the yellowing close to the trunk is normal and what they do in the fall. the other problem is apparently a mild case of blight. they have been sprayed. hopefully it works.

thanks for everyone's replys.
