Cypress and Ch. Elm in need
Dear all, I have some questions about my Cypress and Chinese Elm. They are not on deaths door, yet i want to act now before it is too late.
My cypress was planted from a cutting, and began to grow vigorously. Yet now its green leaves are beginning to yellow at the edges and die. Could this be a problem with the watering? They are outside in the Australian summer, it SHOULD be ideal, but there is something wrong. My chinese elm is about four years old. I bought it about two months ago as a fairly good mallsai and moved it to a bonsai pot. It has not grown in this time, instead its leaves are also beginning to yellow and brown. Is this natural? Any replies would be appreciated. Thanks, Bren. |

Re: Cypress and Ch. Elm in need
I don't know your climate, but the plants might need some light afternoon shade. *Sometimes, pots in fierce sun can overheat, and cooked roots aren't able to transport water that the trees really need when the temperatures rise. * Maybe some 50% lath or shade cloth that you can remove in the fall would help.
Regards, Matt

Re: Cypress and Ch. Elm in need
Thanks for the post, but i dont think this is it, as it already gets afternoon shade. AS for the Ch. Elm, i just realized that it is coming up to Autumn. That might explain the elm, but the cypress is still in need.
Thanks, Bren. |

Re: Cypress and Ch. Elm in need
Both the trees you mention do quite well in warm climates, but they both require daily watering. Their soils must stay moist at all times. And, especially for cypress. Some people keep cypress pots in shallow water trays during the summer. I just use a lot of peat. You cannot drown cypress.
