Chinese Privet: Losing leaves
I bought a "chinese privet" bonsai. I live in Iowa, and I keep my bonsai by a window where it gets filtered sunlight.
Many of its leaves are getting brown at the tips, and then falling off. It has some new growths though. It is getting cooler, and my apartment stays at about 65-70 degrees by the window. I water my bonsai once a week, soaking it in the sink for 10-15 minutes, with diluted Shultz 10-15-10 fertilizer. Should I be concerned about the leaf loss? Should I take it away from the window? I love my plant and want it to be healthy and happy...please help! Thank you! Frances |

Re: Chinese Privet: Losing leaves
Hi Frances,
Most problems beginners have with their trees are usually a combination of location and watering. It would be best to check your tree daily and water as needed than to rely on a fixed watering schedule. Evergreen trees do shed their leaves. Usually this occurs as the new growth develops. If the rate that the new leaves are appearing keeps everything in balance, it's not a problem. here are some notes on Chinese privet as bonsai by Zach Smith P.S. It would be great if you could post a picture of your bonsai. Regards, Matt

Re: Chinese Privet: Losing leaves
Thank you for responding. Sorry it took me so long to reply.
My tree has some new growth, but it is looking twiggy, and "balding" from the loss of leaves. Some of its new shoots are also beginning to wither and become brown. The leaves get brown at the tips, then fall off with the slightest touch. I watered it last Thurday, and her soil is still wet, as is the bottom of her trunk. I wish i could post a picture, but i do not have a camera. I will correct my watering, as you suggested! It has been cold and cloudy here lately--do you think it is losing leaves/withering from lack of light? Thank you so much for your help Frances |

Re: Chinese Privet: Losing leaves
It would not hurt to add a grow light. In the absence of light, growth tends to become long and thin, with a lot of space between the internodes. It also tends to be pale green, but that can occur for a variety of reasons.
You could certainly add a growlight. Set it on a 24 hour timer for about 12 hours of light, and get it as close to the plant as you can without generating a lot of heat. The problem sounds like overwatering to me, but of course, I can't be sure. Regards, Matt
