Unhappy Chinese Elm lost all its leaves :(

I have a Chinese Elm bonzai and from time to time it will lose it's leaves and then they all grown back greener and fuller. I went away for a couple of weeks and gave my tree to a friend to look after and now it has no leaves and they are not growing back or even budding. I have given it bonzai food, plenty of sun and water. Any suggestions?

Hello Diana,

Welcome to bT.

There are a couple of threads active at the moment with regard to the care of your tree.

Here is that thread I was thinking of. . .have a look here

It has some good advice. If too late for this one, then better luck with the next

Better still, Joanie, the moderator of this section might merge the posts for you.

Regards,
Ian.

I have a Chinese Elm bonzai and from time to time it will lose it's leaves and then they all grown back greener and fuller. I live in Los Angeles and it is often too hot to eep it outside, so it generally lives inside. I have had it for a year. I went away for a couple of weeks and gave my tree to a friend to look after and now it has no leaves and they are not growing back or even budding. I have given it bonzai food, plenty of sun and water. Any suggestions?

Make a small scratch on the trunk with your fingernail. If you see a little bit of green, your tree is still alive.

If that is the case, stop feeding it because you could hurt it worse. Keep the soil just slightly damp. It needs less water because it doesn't have leaves right now. Dappled sun would be better than inside. Can you put it under a tree or a piece of lattice or something? Even if it's hot, as long as there is shade it would probably be better for the tree.

Give it time. If you have seen green you need to be very patient with it. (The green in the scratch, by the way, will turn brown in a day or so, don't worry if it does)

Good luck!

What kind of care did the plant receive in your friend's care? That would help tremendously in the advice we give you. Where do you live?

Its not uncommon for a c. elm to lose a few leaves and replace them thru the year. They don't naturally defoliate themselves completely without some severe trauma; lack of water for an extended period of time is severe trauma. Give your tree a few weeks before you count it out. C. Elms are pretty tough. It'll probably bounce back, but you need to take really good care of it for the rest of the year if/when it does.

Also, its not a good idea to fertilize a stressed tree. Theres some really scientific reasons I'm sure, but it basically induces more growth that the tree obviously is having a hard time supporting and can further stress the tree. Keep that in mind next time.
