Chinese Elm Has Yellow Leaves
. What kind of bonsai do you have and how long have you had it? Chinese Elm since the beginning of March it is said to be between 2-3 years old
2. Where did you get it, and what was its condition at the time you acquired it? From a Garden centre and it was Very healthy until I got my handson it!! 3. When did you notice the problem? After I watered it too much - I tried to feed it aswell and I think that this may be the cause 4. How have you been watering it and how frequently? Once every two days or so 5. What region are you located geographically and where are you keeping your tree, indoors or out, full sun, part sun, shade? Scotland - indoor and outdoor at times. I know that they are supposed to be kept out doors but I do bring it in over night due to the frost. If indoors it is kept on a window sill which is east facing in the afternoon it is outside. 6. Does the soil have any unpleasant odor? No 7. When was the tree last repotted? Don't know brand new to me 8. Is there any discoloration of the foliage? Would you describe it as turgid and green, dry and brown, wilting, mottled or partially eaten? If you brush the foliage with a fingertip, does it fall off? Leaves go yellow and drop off. Yes they are dry. No signs of bite marks on them and they do drop quite easily. 9. Is there evidence of pests, like ants or aphids? No 10. Can you post a picture of your tree to the forum? Not at present but will do if it 1) survives and 2) it would help anyone solve the problem. |

YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME

Re: Chinese Elm Has Yellow Leaves
Hi... Here are some thoughts of a novice who has four Chinese Elms. I do NOT think you are in big trouble, yet!
First you may be overwatering this guy. Overwatering will cause the leaf thing you mention. You want to water when the tree needs water, not on a schedule! If you can place a piece of chop stick or ice cream bar stick in the soil. Check daily, when the stick is wet..no water. If the stick is slightly damp this is when you water. I would not feed the tree till it stabilizes. As for the coming in and out, if you must.... out is better(after the frost). Lastly your tree may also just be ajusting to its new home...patience and you will see it come back. Look for new growth! Good Luck, Jay

Re: Chinese Elm Has Yellow Leaves
Are you getting new leaves and buds together with the leaf yellowing? Sometimes when the Chinese Elm doesn't get cold enough, it will hold onto all its leaves through the winter, and then push them off at once (yellow & fall) in the spring as the new buds form.
If not, take a look at the watering suggestions Jay made. More info in the ***FAQ*** and bonsaiTALK Links under Beginners and Techniques->Watering Regards, Matt

Re: Chinese Elm Has Yellow Leaves
Thanks for all the advice. The funny thing was that it rained here on Thursday so I stuck it out in the rain. This weekend I noticed a lot of green shoots but some leaves still falling off being brown/yellow. So I presume that it is 'healthier' than when I last posted!!
