chinese elm acting funny
so a little gift mom gave me was a chinese elm. it was doing GREAT when i first got it but now its acting "funny" dropping alot of leaves, about 85% of the leaves turning brown and falling off at the touch or strong wind. i know its not dead yet because the limbs are pretty easy to bend still and there is some new growth coming out of the trunk. the tree is in full light and gets watered when the soil is dry on the top. any ideas on what to do? its like it is overwatered but i havent been watering it that much. im thinking that my roommates girlfriend might be watering it (she wants to get into bonsai)

hwo long have you had it? is it still adjusting to its new home? hows the soil? if it's a gift like in picturing, you may want to repot in something better draining, looser or coarser, the stuff they use for "gift bonsai' is usually designed to stay wet to keep on store shelves....
and pictures always help and search for other similar threads.... new bonsai... dropping leaves... mallsai... chinese elm...

Hi Matt,
Tell "Roomies" girlfriend to buy her own and leave yours alone. It does sound like over watering. Mom

Watch for overwatering on those trees and also try to water around the base rather than through the leaves early in the spring. You can find tons of info on fungus, overwatering, keeping outdoors, soil composition etc in this forum for those trees (they are very common -actually one of my favorites since they are pretty forgiving)
It may very well be that its simply adjusting to its new surroundings, they are very strong trees but can get stressed from changing climate or light conditions. So I wouldnt worry too much just yet, espcially since its still pushing growth. Do a search through the forum and you will find all the info you need for this species. |

ok well i'm thinking that i might just repot it into some bonsai soil anyways. and i guess that im going to have to have a talk with the roomies girlfriend. and mom she wants to go out to your place and maybe get a tree. maybe i can get a referal tree
haha ill talk to you more about it. and the tree has been happy at my place for a few moths now and no problems. should it just start growing back pretty quick when it gets back to a good watering schedule? is there anything that i can give it to make it grow faster or would that make it worse? im using osmocote on it and a bonsai cookie for fertalizer and the plant is in as much full sun as i can give it |
