Huh? Can My Bonsai Be Saved?

Recently I discovered spongelike growth at the trunk of my jade tree. When I looked through my bonsai books, the symptoms seem to match the description of "canker." I went ahead and removed the infected tissue, but I'm not quite sure how to ensure that my bonsai doesn't die ( photo included). Does anybody have an idea as far as diagnosis and treatment?

Thanks a lot for your input!

Leyla

get some sealant on the wound to make sure the tree doesn't lose too much water and to keep any bugs out.

I'm guessing you may have crown rot brought on by overwatering, but I am not a specialist in succulent & cactus materials.

Regards,

Matt

P.S. If it is rot...sealants and things like that would be exactly the wrong thing to do to prevent rot. You might end up needing to reroot the plant in suitable media.

P.P.S. Are you trying to grow this indoors?

Sorry, I don't quite understand your post, but don't be discouraged from posting. There is a lot that people (including especially me) from looking at problems, and photos help a great deal both from a preventive and corrective standpoint.

Matt

That doesn't look like the insides of any jade I've seen, normally they're an avocado color, how old is the wound? I hope its about 6-10 days old (means its drying over), if that's a fresh wound, I dunno what to say. But I do know your soil looks way way too moist. My jade soil glistens with moisture for about five minutes, then fades to a dull brown, and is a dusty tan 'fore it gets watered again.
If that area gets soft and mushy, cut (or snap) the tree about two segments up, let the wound dry a bit, dust well with rooting hormone, put in WELL draining soil (I use 50-50 perlite-potting soil, but that was before i found other drainage-improvers), water very lightly, and she should reroot.
Washout don't worry about getting shotdown by the pro's its how us newbies learn, there's no harm intended.
I got a soft spot (no pun intened) for jades.

Good luck
jim

I would second the notion regarding rot. That does look like it's healing . Watch the water- you can let it dry out until the leaves look wrinkled a bit.

It's not even necessary to do as much as the other Jim said to propagate jade. You can toss pieces onto the top of a pot of soil in semi-sun and they'll soon root. Even the leaves. If they wrinkle, just water the soil...
