Brown needles - Help!!
This is my 5 needled pine- I have had it 1 month.
Well last week end it was pale green needles, now they are brown. At first I only watered it a few times but I have begun to water more as the condition has got worse (maybe 3 times a week spray). Then I saw my other post that said I should not water it much. How much is much I wonder. Its been very hot here in Shanghai so I thought it was drying out! Anyway yesterday I gave it a life giving bath of water (over flowing in pot). I suppose I am killing my first Bonsai. Some suggestion would be really appreciated. Simon - Shanghai |

Hmm...sounds like your "life-giving" baths may be doing just the opposite. Pines tend to like things on the dry side. Out of curiosity, since the picture appears to have been made indoors, are you keeping this tree inside? If so, then it really doesn't have much of a chance. It needs to be outside and allowed to dry out some between waterings. I highly recommend that you do some research on how to properly care for your tree before you do anything else with it (besides putting it outside and laying off the water...)
For example...my eastern white pine, which is still just a seedling planted in potting soil, sits in full sun in 100 degree F weather, and gets watered about once or twice a week at the VERY most. If I were to water this tree every day, it would die VERY quickly. Please keep in mind that this type of treatment may not work in your area of the world. Regards, John

Simon - Your pine is dead. Almost everyone who has had a bonsai has also experienced failure (a dead bonsai). Use this experience as a learning tool and your next bonsai will be more successful. Some things that this tree may have taught you; white pines need to be outdoors (any most other bonsai also) pines do not like to be overwatered Some questions that this may lead you to: What are good starter bonsai? How do you keep your bonsai healthy? What are some good indoor bonsai? Good luck to you in choosing your next bonsai. -Candy |

Hmmm....I believe that you are right, Candy. I guess I should have enlarged the pic before I posted...
Sorry, Simon. John
