Broken Branch

I have a large (10-12 foot diameter) Japanese Maple that is at least 50 years old. Yesterday the neighbor's kid broke a large branch off of it, arggggggh! The branch measured approx. 1 1/2 to 2 inches in diameter, was about 4 feet long, and had terminal foliage of about 4 feet in diameter. The break was very close to the branch's junction with a larger main branch, thus, the broken stub had to be cut off essentially flush with the main branch. We sealed the cut with pruning sealer.

The tree has been generally quite healthy. What can I do to help my tree recover from this trauma? What is the long term prognosis for this tree? I've heard that this kind of damage can cause far-reaching effects (even death) throughout the tree.

Also, any tips on propagating the broken branch? I have the broken end in a bucket of water right now.

Help!

Scott,
Prop the branch upright, thin out the foliage put it in some soil with rooting hormone, place it out of direct sunlight and we'll see what happens. I'm not experienced with Jpn. Maple, so I'm not sure on its successes with rooting. But it's worth a shot.

Also try these guys:

Good luck

Double SS,
Just one nuts opinion but I don't think your maple will even notice and the propagation of old wood in summer is next to impossibe. My advice, take a nap and relax.

Mark me down as #3. If you sealed the wound, the tree will be fine. Throw the old branch away (or maybe offer to beat the kid with it).

If this is a tree growing in the ground, it should be fine. It would have been better to cut the stub to the collar instead of flush with the trunk but............oh well. And arborists are no longer using pruning sealer because the school of thought now is that it can seal in disease but remember that sealers have been used for forever before without much noticable damage. When limbs are cut to the collar, the wound heals quicker. I have an old Jap. Maple that has withstood quite a bit of abuse over the years and, as delicate as it may look, it has survived it all. So........ditto..........sit back and relax.
