Apartment Living
Hi all
I am new to this site and hope that there is someone who can help me... I live in Sydney in an apartment high up and have a new Bonsai... unfortunately I have tried to keep it watered and in the sun (strong sun this spring in Sydney) but it's brittle and the leaves are falling off... I'm thinking that I have overwatered or haven't transfered to a new pot but could it be the strong dry winds that have killed my bonsai? If so how do I shelter my bonsai without blocking the sun ![]() Thanks in advance |

It would help to know what kind of tree you have and also a picture so we could give specific help.
Sound as though you may have it outdoors where the wind gets at it. And that is not bad as long as the winds aren't terribly high all the time. That would dry it even faster. Watering is the most important, as to when to water and not to overwater. Water only when the soil seems dry to the touch just under the surface. Again the specie of tree will determine how much it needs as well as the amount of light and wind.

Thanks Reppoter,
I'm not sure of the type (was a present) but think that it is a fig... and I've (hopefully) attached a picture of my bonsai. On the winds - they can be quite high as I'm high up. I wasn't sure if I was killing my bonsai through lack of water, overwatering or the hot sun and winds were doing the job... Hope this can help Thanks again Chris |

Hi Chris, Your plant looks like a boxwood and it also looks like there is gravel glued to the top of the soil. If so, that is probably the reason that the plant is dying. Root rot can develop very easily under the stones. If so, pull the rocks off, and then put the plant into a "hospital tent" otherwise known as a clear plastic bag. Seal the bag so that it doesn't sag down around the pot, and then put a couple slashes in it so that the humidity doesn't become overwhelming to the patient. Don't forget to check the soil every few days and also move the plant back out of the sun during the hottest part of the day because you don't want to cook it. If this helps and you see good leaf growth beginning, then every other day add another slash to the bag and gradually ween your plant off the extra humidity. If you were to just remove the bag after it has gotten used to the extra humidity, the suddenly dry air would instantly dry your new leaves up. Good luck, hope this helps.
