american elm with brown tips on leaves

Hi,

I purchased what I was told is an American elm (might actually be a Zelkova--dont' know for sure) about a month ago. At first, it seemed to do quite well in full sun. However it then started getting brown tips on its leaves. I moved it to a shadier location, where it continued to get the brown tips. I then pulled it out of the pot to check its roots. Some seemed to be possibly rotted--I cut those out and repotted it very gritty soil. Put it back in the partial shade, and still I'm getting these brown tips on the leaves. Pretty soon, there will be no leaves left. I've also been letting the soil dry just slightly before watering.

Please help!

Gayle

I don't understand. Are the leaves with brown tips falling off?

Regards,

Matt

Hi Matt,

Thanks for your reply. Eventually, yes. The brown tips grow in size until the leaf yellow and falls off. There is a yellow border between the brown and the green leaf (what I have read is leaf burn, but it also occurred a couple weeks after the tree was placed in the shade).

You might look at this page. It doesn't sound like Dutch Elm disease, which is generally associated with wilting, then browning, but there is a discussion of "Bacterial Leaf Scorch" and "Elm Yellows," which sounds similar. It's in the matrix about 1/2 way down the page.

Of course the symptoms are consistent with root rot, too.

Matt
