Exclamation 2nd Try-Pomegranate Help

Hey there,

I need some advice, I tried getting some help on the beginner forum but only got one response. The situation has continued to get worse so I thought it was worth a second try. Here is my story:

I just repotted a pre-Bonsia pomegranate plant that is about 2-3 years old. It was partially trained so I did no cutting, but did repot it from a 5 gal container to a small Bonsia pot. (Pictures to Follow) My problem is a week or so later this healthy plant has started to turn yellow, looks like it is dropping leaves etc.

What can I do to help this plant survive? Right now it is out side day and night with mild evening temps. Please help?

how much of the roots did you remove?

Is it in the sun or shade?

What kind of soil is it in?

What is your watering routine?

Is there any sign of infestation?

It's kind of late in the year out here for repotting. You said you did no cutting, but I presume to go from the 5 gal nursery pot to the bonsai pot you removed a significant amount of roots?

These guys like their soil on the dry side. Only water when the soil starts to dry out. Other than that, barring an infestation of something, there's not much you can do. Put it in a shady spot, don't over water, and hope for the best. Poms are pretty tough.

Bob,

I did remove some roots, I would say 1-2 (tap roots) but they represented less than 20% of root mass.

The soil that I used was corse sand and Lava rock. Seemed more sand than the pot I removed it from but (to the novice) I thought it would be ok.

I water from the top every night, unless it is still moist (We have had some very cloudy day the last couple of weeks)

As for sun it is in the sun (6 hours) but as I mentioned above it has been very cloudy so I did not move it to the shade because I thought that whatever sun it could get might help it pull out of this funk.

I do not see any signs of infestation, like I said the plant seemed real health and ready to be repotted when I took it out of the original container.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

david

It may just be stress from repotting. i would put it into partial shade/ dappled light (like under a large tree in the yard). Watch the moisture level closely - not too dry, not too wet. You could also consider defoliating at least partially to decrease transpirational losses.

Time will tell - I know my pom has been pretty resiliant - It got pretty dry a time or two and dropped all its leaves, but responded with new growth when appropriate care was resumed.

Good luck, keep us posted.
