Tree-art

Frequently, in discussions with people who do not grow bonsai, I will be told-

"yeah, but trees don't look like that, do they"

Almost always, this will be after they have seen a heavily carved, twisted, stylized piece of art. These people find it hard to accept such bonsai as representations of real trees, and I must admit that I do too, sometimes.

So when I browse through the latest Bonsai Europe magazine, and show the pretty pictures to Mrs Treebeard, the discussion starts, with the subject being the what, why & how with regard to heavily carved, twisted, stylized pieces of art.

The end result was the idea (from Mrs TB) that such creations should be called

Tree-Art

...an apt description, I thought.

Anyone agree/disagree

Regards,

Chris.

I agree . . . I had a nice long post typed out, but I'd rather not open that jar if you know what I mean. I'm sure someone else will though.

Hey TB, during my recent trip to Taiwan, I got to see lots of wild junipers, and while they did have some deadwood, indeed they weren't those wildy carved junipers with lush foliage in taiken ten pictures. But on that same note, I was awed by the Yews that grew wild, with tons of deadwood, twisting dead limbs, and yet beatiful lush foliage in other parts of the trees. It was very easy for me to see how people in that part of the world get their inspiration for the beautiful juniper bonsai they carve. It changed my whole perspective on carved trees.
