Lightbulb Inspirations Gallery: Trees in Nature

I thought it would be fun to have a thread where people could share the really amazing full-sized trees that they've seen out in nature.

I find this a wonderful source of inspiration when working on bonsai - and bonsai, in turn, has given me a much deeper appreciation for the shapes and forms that trees take on, both in the city and in wilder locations.

I'll begin with a picture that I took a decade ago at Point Lobos in California.

Eyvind Earle

The fantasy mood and tortured deadwood in your photograph reminds me of Eyvind Earle, the famous artist and Walt Disney Studios background painter.

Should be required reading for any bonsai artist.

Wow - I didn't know about Eyvind Earle's work. He has a very interesting way of representing trees - very different from the japanese painting styles that we often try to imitate in our bonsai.

And trees play such an important part in his artwork. Thanks for the pointer, Matt! I'll have to see if our library has either of those books...

This photo was taken at west dean gardens(south england). I like the way it is a full size tree but the branches look like the have been wired with very abrupt curves.

The "Spirit Little Cedar" or the "witch tree" as called by the tourist is actually a 300+ year old cedar on the north shore of Lake Superior in Minnesota. It clings to a rock and has been battered by high winds and waves.
