I thought it would be fun to have a thread where people could share the really amazing full-sized trees that they've seen out in nature.
I find this a wonderful source of inspiration when working on bonsai - and bonsai, in turn, has given me a much deeper appreciation for the shapes and forms that trees take on, both in the city and in wilder locations. I'll begin with a picture that I took a decade ago at Point Lobos in California.

Eyvind Earle
![]() The fantasy mood and tortured deadwood in your photograph reminds me of Eyvind Earle, the famous artist and Walt Disney Studios background painter. Should be required reading for any bonsai artist. |

Wow - I didn't know about Eyvind Earle's work. He has a very interesting way of representing trees - very different from the japanese painting styles that we often try to imitate in our bonsai.
And trees play such an important part in his artwork. Thanks for the pointer, Matt! I'll have to see if our library has either of those books... -Old Mister |
