rational behind the high ticket prices
At the Midwest Bonsai Society show in August we had a demo tree done by our guest judge Colin Lewis. It turned out quite nice, but we decided to hold on to it for a year and provide some good aftercare, then auction or raffle it off next year.
I was in favor of auctioning it, so that it would be more likely to go to someone who knew how to take care of it. But the other officers felt they would make more money from a raffle, which is probably true. They felt that if we had the higher raffle ticket prices, like the $20 that has been mentioned in this thread, then only "serious" bonsaists would buy tickets. That way it would be less likely that some random attendee at the show would win the tree and not know how to take care of it (we have alot of general public coming to our show as it is held in the botanical garden). Well, long story short one of our club members offered us twice what the stock cost, so we just sold it to him and got it over with. It would have been interesting to see how well the expensive tickets sold, as opposed to our usual $1 tickets. - bob |
