As far as I know if it is off then it is off. Maybe Matt will chime in here with the answer.
By the way I have never posted anything to anybodys "rep" points. It was a game that I just never bothered to play.

I have had my rep points on or off at various times since we've had them.

I turned them off more or less straight away.

After a while I was curious and turned them on. To my surprise I had collected some points.

Seems that turning them off only puts up the closed sign but doesn't lock the door so to speak.

Regards,

Chris.

You know, I haven't really seen many people being "rude" here, maybe I just see things differently? Could it be that simle benign comments are misinterrupted? Maybe rading comments is like giving a critique, you have to start with an open mind?

Having an open mind is one thing. Being rude is another. I have an open mind, but the way that I choose to deal with people is through kindness. Can there be misinterpetation through typed word due to lake of non-verbal cues, voice, and what not...sure.

But when people come right out and take personal digs at another person, I have to ask myself...why?

Does it happen alot? Nope. But it does happen pretty consistantly from the same people. I am a newbie on this site, and I can see it. Someone even took a cheap shot at me through the Rep Points. Again...Why? Because I lack an open mind? No, I don't think so.

I just think some people are rude and want to show everyone how good they are by over inflating their less than average skills. What better way to do this than shove at people so hard that they won't challenge you back. Translation...rude.

Just my thoughts,

Jeffrey

Come to think of it I don't recall anyone "reacting to any less than praise with quick and harsh rebuttals and criticism" as frequently as implied. Some links to examples would be nice...

...otherwise cynical old me will insist upon seeing a bunch of straw men set up to be knocked down...

Regards,

Chris.

Come on, Treebeard, surely you realize what you are asking is the fastest way to turn this thread into a flame-fest of pointed fingers and hurt feelings.

I think I'd rather suffer your cynical judgments about my intentions, than see this thread dragged down like that.

Happy New Year all! I decided to post to this after the new year, after I made my resolution!
Since last Oct./ Nov. when I had a very hard time on the forum, I had taken a real blast in my reputation. I took a very hard look at that and decided that this was no place I wanted to be. I decided that the reputation system should work for each poster in as many ways as it does readers.

During that time I had fallen from the top three to the bottom of that page, about 13th in place. For me personaly, this is not the place I wanted to be with the no. of posts I had, nor the contributions I have made to this forum.
So... I changed my name and tried that for a while. In subsequent posts it became obvious that some wished for Bonsai-al to remain. I decided that they were right, Thats the guy that built the reputation and it is not me to change in the face of adversity.

So, I like being back up near the top, it makes me feel good, and I use that as my weather vane of how to conduct myself on the forum. If I get to the point that I feel it necessary to turn it off because I have sunk that low, it will be time for me to find another hobby.
And... I still feel that I can be honest and give my point of view since I always include my opinion as to why I feel that way, and give ideas that I would do to change it. Good or bad, I feel thats the least anyone should do.
And...when asked a question, I think the right thing to do is engage the question and give a fair answer. I see no reason to dodge questions and play cat and mouse games. Thats juvenile.

So in the spirit of 2005 I will continue on the current path and let those that wish to play cat and mouse do so. It gives me much comic relief. I think I will need that while I bite my tongue.
Respectfully(hah), Bonsai-al

If you ask me, the whole rep thing is just a bunch of hog-wash. It's just ridiculous, b/c people abuse the system. That, and who cares about reps? When this system surfaced on another message board i frequent, and post on much more than this, everyone just abused the system. "Rep whore" threads popped up all over, and soon newbs had hundreds of reps, and those of us who were old and seasoned vets were left with little to no reps to our names. Instead of fighting back, we just left it be. The right thing to do eh? Well now anyone new on the board sees that most of the experienced people don't have the reps, so they trust the newbs with the reps. These guys are handing out horrible advice, and are just brining the boards way down. Reason number one to not like reps.

reason number two. Reps are giving on a personal basis not on a basis of the post being read. I don't like will... here ya go i give you neg. reps everytime i read something you wrote. (just an example, i don't give him neg reps... but i do despise him ) This kills the system too.

My personal opinion to fix the problem on repping? Get rid of them. We lived with them for how many years and we don't need to them around.

yours truly,
rep hater
