I didn't realize that study groups were just for accomplished people...or are there different kinds? That sounds like a great thing to be in, for intensive study. More indepth information than can be presented in an hour or two or four.....

Bonsai is way ahead in the teaching aspects!

Which is what makes it such an addictive pastime!!

Regarding ABS seminars, they used to do this years ago. If they are going back to it on a regular basis, I think it's a good idea. I went to one, if memory serves, in 1979 that was held on the UC Davis campus.

There are "different kinds" of study groups. I belong to two "different kinds" of study groups.

1. This is a study group that meets once per month and we bring our own trees and focus on artistic and horticultural aspects of bonsai. As a group, we occasionally meet with an accomplished bonsai artist and do "field trips" to enhance our bonsai endeavors. We may critique a tree and defend our position. This is a stable group with the same people each study group. Note: This is different from a club. We do not collect dues or worry about fundraising or membership numbers.

2. This is a black pine study group with Kenji Miyata. We meet 3 times per year to work on our black pines and learn special requirements and techniques with black pines. The people come and go in this group and their skill level tends to be more diverse.

With like-minded people, you could start your own study group.

Can't we just come and play at your house? You have cool friends and neat toys!

Yes, those both sound appealing, but the first one sounds positively wonderful!! Going to do some more investigating...
